PSA for Students #7

The Library is a crime ridden place. It is not safe. Just because use of the library is free and there are helpful, wonderful people staffing the desks, does not mean there aren't nefarious patrons. Leaving your laptop, purse, cell phone, and/or I-pod on a table in the library does not guarantee that it will still be there when you come back three hours or three minutes later.

There are thieves hiding in the stacks. They will sweep up anything that is left unattended, and you will never see it again. They will take it even if you are sleeping beside it. Nothing is safe. There have been reports of even textbooks and meal cards being stolen.

Just because you signed an honor statement does not mean everyone has or that everyone will abide by it.

Please keep an eye on your possessions because if you don't, you'll find out someone else has.

I work at a public library branch in a shopping mall. God, the humanity! And yet, we still have people who leave Laptop computers unattended when they go down the hall to use the bathroom. It makes us crazy!!!!

Kristy, out of curiosity, do you work in Indianapolis (if you don't feel uncomfortable sharing)? I live in MA now but grew up in Indy and there was a library branch in a mall and I always found that rather odd.

People are always leaving their laptops, iPods, books, backpacks, etc all over our library. It amazes me. We can't see a lot of the tables from the reference desk and even if we could, we can't agree to be the security people for their stuff. We have actual jobs! Even my son, who has heard this from me all his life, does it. I'm constantly amazed.

Actually, I work in Seattle. Our County Library system has two branches in shopping malls--ours is the 2nd of them. They are proving quite popular, so there will probably be more. I'm told we ripped the idea off from Vancouver. I didn't know there was one in Indianapolis too, but it doesn't surprise me.

You would think people would be careful with someone as valuable as a laptop or an IPod, but then again, I guess people's lack of intelligence (or just lack of healthy mistrust) should not be surprising. I think we should take your post, frame it, and post in visible places in the library. No matter how often we try to remind students to be mindful and that we are not responsible for loses, they still get careless. As Katya points out, it is not our job to be their security guards. People need to learn a little personal responsibility, a seemingly lost concept. Best, and keep on blogging.

There's a library on the ground floor up at Bloody Erina (local unnecessarily large shopping centre) not far from me. Don't know about the nickage rate in there but it's got 3 glass walls so keeping an eye out for unattended laptops wouldn't be hard.

It's bloody convenient for the bus though. The stop's just ouside the window. The Dear Old Things don't have far to totter.
